On Friday, May 2, 2025, the Office for The German domestic intelligence services announced what we have known for years: The AfD is “definitely right-wing extremist”. Not just in parts, not just as a suspected case - no: in its entirety. Although the classification is hardly surprising in terms of content, it nevertheless underlines the seriousness of the situation: we are dealing with a neo-fascist mass movement. It is the largest opposition party in the Bundestag.

It had to come to this before the protectors of the constitution could come to this conclusion. It comes very late. For years, the media and state institutions have rolled out the red carpet for the AfD on its way to the far right and have been exploited by it at the same time. Democracy is eroding: As recently as January, a majority in the Bundestag was unwilling to acknowledge the obvious and allowed the motion to ban the now-elected right-wing extremists to languish in committee.

But more important than the question of why not enough has happened so far is the question of what will happen now.

Banning this anti-constitutional party is the least we can do. Beyond that, however, the normalization of right-wing extremist positions must be combated and a clear edge must finally be shown.
