Germany-wide protests for AfD ban announced | Bundestag, Bundesrat and federal government called on to initiate party ban proceedings
In response to the classification of the entire AfD as "certainly right-wing extremist" by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, broad civil society alliances have announced a Germany-wide day of protest for an AfD ban next Sunday (11 May 2025).
The nationwide network Zusammen Gegen Rechts (Together Against the Right) and the campaign Defend Human Dignity - AfD Ban Now!, which has been joined by over 60 civil society organisations, are among those calling for the protests. The alliances are calling on the Bundestag, Bundesrat and the incoming federal government to immediately initiate the ban proceedings against the AfD before the Federal Constitutional Court.
"The categorisation by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution must wake up even the last doubters. For far too long, we have waited, hesitated and appeased, while the AfD's hatred has continued to spread and cause suffering to fellow human beings on a daily basis. The Bundestag, Bundesrat and Federal Government must now clear the way so that the Federal Constitutional Court can finally begin its work. Together with broad alliances, we will therefore take to the streets on 11 May and demand an AfD ban now," explains Malte Engeler, press spokesperson for the campaign.
