Nationwide day of action "No more excuses - ban the AfD now!" | Demonstrations in favour of an AfD ban already announced in over 25 German cities
Demonstrations have been announced in over 25 cities, including Berlin, Munich and Dresden, to mark the nationwide day of action for an AfD ban on Sunday, 11 May 2025. The nationwide network Zusammen gegen Rechts (Together Against the Right) and the campaign Defend Human Dignity - Ban the AfD Now!, backed by 60 civil society organisations, have called for the protests. The alliances are calling on the Bundestag, Bundesrat and the new federal government to immediately initiate proceedings to ban the AfD before the Federal Constitutional Court.
"Deportation plans, attacks on self-determination rights, relativisation of National Socialism: the AfD is a concrete danger for everyone who does not fit into its world view. But it can be stopped. The Basic Law provides for this. We know from our historical experience that we cannot stand by and wait until the far right comes to power. We must defend democracy and fundamental rights. The time for an AfD ban is now," explains Julia Dück, spokesperson for the campaign.
The organisers assume that numerous other cities will join the protests in the coming days. The central rally will take place on Sunday at 4 pm in Berlin in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
The Protestant Church Congress recently also passed a resolution in favour of a ban on the AfD. The trade union ver.di and the German Federal Youth Council are also calling for the procedure for an AfD ban to be initiated.
Jon Klockow from Zusammen gegen Rechts adds: "The time for hesitation is over: the conditions for banning the AfD are in place. Now we need the courage to actually take this step. A party ban is no substitute for the necessary confrontation with anti-democratic attitudes, but it is an important lever for depriving the AfD of resources and influence. At the same time, society must show a clear edge: No claim to a stage, no taking media presence for granted, no normalisation through talk show invitations or room rentals. Anyone who wants to protect our democracy must not only defend it, but also set themselves apart."
