Since last summer, there has been a lively debate about banning the AfD. The reason for this was the Höcke wing's breakthrough at the European party conference in July 2023. The election gains in eastern German municipalities, the threat of power in federal states such as Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt and the mass protests against the AfD's plans to expel people have further fueled the debate on banning the party. But what are the requirements for a ban? What risks does the ban procedure entail? And can human dignity and democracy still be defended without resorting to this instrument?
