After protests at the federal party conference: SPD announces decision to ban AfD
At the SPD's federal party conference today, Saturday, in front of the CityCube in Berlin, numerous activists sent a strong signal in favour of initiating proceedings to ban the AfD. The protests were organised by the campaign Defend Human Dignity – Ban the AfD Now! The campaign calls on the SPD to take a clear stance in favour of banning the AfD and to submit corresponding motions to initiate a ban in the Bundestag, the Federal Government and the Bundesrat before the end of this year.
During the rally, over 1,000 postcards from all over Germany were handed over to SPD delegates, including Carmen Wegge, Hakan Demir and Orkan Özdemir, to underline the demand for a ban on the AfD without further delay. In addition, hundreds of people took the opportunity to contact members of the Bundestag directly via the campaign website (https://afd-verbot.jetzt/de/abgeordnetentool).
"With every state and federal election, the AfD comes closer to its goal of establishing a fascist order in Germany. We do not want to stand by and wait until the AfD comes to power and we have conditions like in the USA – or our own history repeats itself. It is time for the SPD to follow up its words with action and campaign at all levels for the rapid initiation of a ban procedure," explains Malte Engeler, press spokesman for the campaign.
After a large number of SPD members of the Bundestag had already voted in favour of initiating a ban in the last Bundestag, party chairman and finance minister Lars Klingbeil, parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch and the Jusos, among others, have recently spoken out in favour of initiating a ban. The SPD has now announced a corresponding party conference resolution.
