Tens of thousands of people demand AfD ban | Protests in over 70 German cities
On 11 May 2025, tens of thousands of people protested across Germany for a ban on the AfD.
Actions and rallies were held in over 70 cities across Germany, including Berlin, Munich and Leipzig. The demonstrations were organised by the campaign Defend Human Dignity - Ban the AfD Now! and the network Zusammen Gegen Rechts (Together Against the Right).
The alliance is calling on the Bundestag, Bundesrat and the new federal government to immediately initiate the ban proceedings against the AfD before the Federal Constitutional Court.
‘The protests this Sunday are unmistakable. There are no more excuses: the ban proceedings against the AfD must be initiated immediately. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has now also categorised the AfD as definitely right-wing extremist. This has long been clear to us. Because the AfD tramples on human dignity. It poses a concrete threat to the lives of all people who do not fit into its nationalist-racist world view. Those who are still hesitating are avoiding a ban or simply want to adopt the AfD's policies themselves. We do not want to stand by and wait until we have conditions like those in the USA - or until our own history repeats itself. We demand an AfD ban now!’ explains Julia Dück, spokesperson for the campaign.
‘We have made it clear in over 70 places today: it is time for those responsible to find the courage to act and apply for a ban on the AfD. Friedrich Merz and Lars Klingbeil now have a choice: either they continue to watch and wait until the AfD takes over and then destroys democracy and fundamental rights. Or they can now initiate proceedings to ban the AfD,’ adds Jon Klockow from Zusammen gegen Rechts.
