‘No more excuses!’ | Protests announced in over 60 cities in favour of a ban on the AfD

The nationwide network Zusammen Gegen Rechts ("Together against the right")and the campaign Defend Human Dignity - Ban the AfD Now! have called for protests across Germany on 11 May 2025. The goal of the protests is for the Bundestag, Bundesrat and the new federal government to immediately initiate proceedings to ban the AfD before the Federal Constitutional Court. In Berlin, the central rally will start at 4.00 pm on Sunday at the Brandenburg Gate.

We are overwhelmed by the fact that demonstrations have been organised in over 60 cities and towns in just a few days. The last Bundestag failed to initiate proceedings to ban the AfD. Now the protests are unmistakable and there are no more excuses: it is time for those responsible to act. The ban procedure against the AfD must finally be initiated,’ explains Julia Dück, spokesperson for the campaign.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution's decision to temporarily not repeat its findings in the summary proceedings before the Cologne Administrative Court does not change the urgency of an AfD ban.

It is not unusual for authorities to relieve the courts in summary proceedings by promising that no measures will be taken until the courts have ruled. The standstill undertaking is a voluntary procedural act by the authority. It is neither court-ordered nor linked to a substantive judgement,’ explains Malte Engeler, press spokesperson for the campaign, adding ’There is no reason to assume that the court will rule against the Federal Office in summary proceedings. This is shown by a look at previous case law on the observation of the AfD by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and widespread legal assessments.
