The AfD Ban Now! campaign welcomes the forthcoming introduction of a motion to ban the AfD in the Bundestag by a non-partisan group of MPs.
“We welcome that there is finally movement in the Bundestag and that the AfD's anti-democratic policies are being seriously addressed. It is high time that the majority of MPs backed a ban on the AfD and thus sent a clear signal for the protection of democracy,” says Julia Dück, spokesperson for AfD Ban Now!
To support the call for a ban on the AfD, it will soon be possible to contact MPs directly on the website www.afd-verbot.jetzt. In addition, the campaign will be present and visible in constituencies across Germany with a variety of activities to show that there is also broad support in society for a ban on the AfD.
“Through various petitions, hundreds of thousands of people are already calling for a ban procedure to be initiated against the AfD. We now want these people to be heard in parliament,” says Malte Engeler, spokesperson for AfD Ban Now! “Via our website, you will also soon be able to follow live which MPs are in favor of banning the AfD, who is still undecided or who is against it. In this way, we are creating transparency about the majority situation in the Bundestag and making it possible to write to the MPs in your own constituency or to talk to those who are not yet convinced that the AfD should be banned.”
Recent events in the Thuringian state parliament show that the conditions for an AfD ban have long been in place. The AfD is taking aggressive action against parliamentarianism here. Other legal experts also agree that the AfD is anti-democratic and violates the constitution.
Prof. Dr. Anna Katharina Mangold, Professor of European Law at the European University of Flensburg: “The AfD aims to impair and eliminate the free democratic basic order: AfD politicians* are undermining trust in the three powers of the state at federal and state level, namely parliaments, governments and the judiciary. They call the press a “lying press” and try to suppress unpopular opinions, including with physical violence. The party leadership does not put a stop to such activities and thus adopts them as a party program.”
Support also comes from civil society and the church:
Ulrich Schneider, author, social expert and long-standing managing director of the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband: “It is no longer the beginnings that we have to defend ourselves against. Germany is already in the midst of a shift to the right against our constitution, fueled by the AfD. The equality of all people is being aggressively denied. There is incitement against minorities and a climate of threat and segregation. History teaches us that this anti-human and anti-constitutional shift to the right must be combated as quickly and consistently as possible. The ban procedure against the AfD is overdue. Those who continue to dither and hesitate are playing into the hands of the enemies of the constitution.”
Stephan Jannasch, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul's parish in Buxtehude, agrees and confirms: “A party ban on the AfD must finally be examined in court. As Christians, we are committed to protecting human dignity and justice. An inhuman and anti-constitutional party must not be allowed to benefit from public funds and resources. It is time to do justice, not to break it.”
