The campaign “AfD Ban Now!” welcomes yesterday's introduction of the motion to ban the party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) in the Bundestag. This is an important step towards protecting democracy. “All MPs who want to protect democracy and human rights should definitely vote in favor of the procedure,” explains Julia Dück, spokesperson for the campaign.
“All MPs who have reservations about voting in favor of the motion should at least abstain and thus not block the initiation of proceedings before the Federal Constitutional Court. The threat posed by the AfD is not a question of party politics - it is about protecting our basic democratic order,” adds Malte Engeler, spokesperson for the campaign.
A ban on the AfD is not only legally possible, but also urgently needed politically. Events such as the AfD's targeted blockade policy in the Thuringian state parliament, the incidents in the Bautzen district council and the multiple personal overlaps with the violent and terrorist extreme right-wing scene clearly show that the party actively attacks democratic and liberal society as soon as it has the opportunity to do so.
The campaign unites a broad civil society movement of anti-fascist organizations, trade unions, activists and many committed citizens who stand together against the right-wing threat. In recent months, numerous people have taken part in actions, informed themselves in regular join-in calls and written directly to members of the Bundestag via the MP tool on the campaign website to campaign for a ban.
The response is clear: people are demanding that politicians take decisive action and protect democracy. The “AfD ban now!” campaign is calling on the members of the Bundestag to send a clear signal for the protection of our democracy and to vote with a broad majority in favor of the motion that has now been tabled so that proceedings can begin at the Federal Constitutional Court.
