On Basic Law Day, May 23, 2026, a broad civil society coalition is calling for a nationwide day of action to ban the AfD. Under the slogan “Defend Human Dignity,” derived from Article 1 of the Basic Law, events will take place in over 20 German cities, including large rallies in Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Tübingen, and Halle an der Saale. In Berlin, passersby can expect a Family Day for the Basic Law, and in Saarbrücken, a walk-through Basic Law exhibit.
The campaigns “Defend Human Dignity – Ban the AfD Now!” and “Stand Up Against Racism!” are organizing the day of protest together with over 60 civil society organizations. The alliance reminds us that the inviolability of human dignity, guaranteed in Article 1, stands as the cornerstone at the very heart of the Constitution. The protection of human dignity is the central mission of the Basic Law. The procedure for banning political parties emerged from the experiences of the Nazi regime’s reign of terror, World War II, and the Holocaust as a (protective) instrument of a robust democracy. The protests call on the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, and the federal government to use precisely this instrument and to immediately initiate proceedings to ban the AfD before the Federal Constitutional Court.
“The AfD is trampling on the dignity of millions of people in Germany, while politicians stand idly by. The CDU/CSU must finally abandon its obstructionist stance on banning the AfD; otherwise, the conservatives will once again make themselves the enablers of fascism. Anyone who truly wants to protect human dignity must stand up to the AfD - using every means our Constitution provides. And NOW!” declares Felix Jochim, press spokesperson for the campaign.
We must prevent a fascist party from coming to power in Germany again. That is why our campaign is calling on everyone to come together on May 23, 2026, to celebrate the Basic Law and human dignity, and to take to the streets to loudly demand a ban on the AfD, in order to build social pressure on parties and politicians.
Here you will find a list of the announced demonstrations, which is continuously updated.
